DFW Drainage Problems Require Expert Solutions
North Texas clay soil doesn't absorb water — it holds it. After heavy rain, that water pools against foundations, floods yards, and undermines retaining walls and hardscapes. Boulderstone designs and installs drainage systems built specifically for DFW soil conditions, giving water a clear path away from your property.
Why Drainage Is the Foundation of Every Landscape
Poor drainage is the number one cause of retaining wall failure, foundation cracking, and landscape erosion in DFW. We treat drainage as a structural requirement — not an afterthought.
Drainage Services We Provide
Every solution is engineered for DFW clay soil conditions.
French Drains
Perforated pipe wrapped in filter fabric and surrounded by gravel channels subsurface water away from foundations and low spots.
Channel & Trench Drains
Surface-level linear drains capture sheet flow across driveways, patios, and hardscaped areas before it reaches your structure.
Catch Basins
Underground collection boxes installed at low points to intercept standing water and route it safely off your property.
Downspout Extensions & Pop-Ups
We extend gutter downspouts underground and terminate with pop-up emitters that release water far from your foundation.
Swales & Grading
Reshaping the ground surface to direct water flow away from structures and toward safe discharge points.
Retaining Wall Drainage
Every retaining wall we build includes engineered drainage behind the wall to prevent hydrostatic pressure and premature failure.
Types of Drainage We Install
Every DFW property has different drainage challenges. We match the right system — or combination of systems — to your specific site conditions.
French Drains
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe wrapped in filter fabric. It intercepts groundwater and subsurface runoff before it reaches your foundation, retaining walls, or low spots in the yard. In DFW's expansive clay soil, French drains are the most effective long-term solution for chronic wet areas and foundation moisture problems. We size the pipe, set the grade, and select the right aggregate for your specific soil conditions.
- Perforated pipe in gravel-filled trench
- Filter fabric prevents sediment clogging
- Gravity-fed — no pump required
- Ideal for foundation perimeter and yard low spots
- Discharges to street, alley, or daylight outlet
Channel & Trench Drains
Channel drains — also called trench drains or linear drains — are installed flush with the surface of driveways, patios, pool decks, and garage aprons. They capture sheet flow across hard surfaces before it pools or runs toward your home. We install concrete-body or polymer channel systems with grated covers that handle heavy vehicle loads and foot traffic while blending into the surrounding hardscape.
- Flush-mount linear grate captures surface runoff
- Ideal for driveways, patios, and pool decks
- Available in concrete or polymer body
- Heavy-duty grates rated for vehicle traffic
- Connects to underground pipe for controlled discharge
Culverts
Culverts route water under driveways, walkways, and property easements without interrupting surface access. We install corrugated metal and reinforced concrete culverts sized to handle the peak flow from your drainage area. Properly sized and bedded culverts prevent washouts, driveway undermining, and erosion at water crossings — a common problem on DFW properties with roadside ditches or natural drainage channels.
- Routes water under driveways and walkways
- Corrugated metal or reinforced concrete pipe
- Sized to peak storm flow for your drainage area
- Prevents driveway washout and undermining
- Headwall and wingwall options for erosion control
Gravel River Bed Drainage
A dry creek bed — or gravel river bed — is a designed drainage swale lined with river rock and boulders that carries stormwater runoff while looking like a natural landscape element. It slows water velocity, reduces erosion, and filters sediment before discharge. In DFW yards where a traditional buried pipe isn't practical or where a visible drainage channel is needed, a gravel river bed is both a functional drainage solution and a landscape upgrade.
- River rock and boulder-lined drainage swale
- Slows water velocity and reduces erosion
- Filters sediment naturally
- Doubles as a landscape feature
- No buried pipe required — low maintenance
Retaining Wall Drainage
Every retaining wall we build includes an engineered drainage system behind the wall. Without it, hydrostatic pressure from saturated DFW clay soil will push a wall over — often within a few years. We install a gravel drainage column directly behind the wall, a perforated collection pipe at the footing, and weep holes or outlets to release pressure. For existing walls showing signs of movement or leaning, we can retrofit drainage to relieve pressure and extend the wall's life.
- Gravel drainage column behind wall face
- Perforated pipe at wall footing
- Weep holes for pressure relief
- Filter fabric to prevent soil migration
- Retrofit drainage available for existing walls

Drainage FAQs
Common questions from DFW homeowners.
Boulderstone solved a drainage problem we'd been fighting for years. After every heavy rain our backyard would flood and the water would run toward the foundation. Felix assessed the property, recommended a French drain system, and his crew had it installed in two days. We haven't had a drop of standing water since.
